Tips on How to Brush Teeth With Braces

As you might imagine, brushing your teeth while wearing braces can sometimes create a bit of a challenge. Thankfully, our team at Lake Ridge Orthodontics put together this brief guide on how to brush teeth with braces to help you out.

How to Brush Teeth with Braces

If you’re wondering how to brush teeth with braces, then you’re in luck. The following steps are generally the best way to ensure a clean mouth while reducing the chance of damage to your orthodontia.

Step One: Take a few minutes to remove rubber bands or any other part of your braces that’s removable. Carefully set these items aside.

Step Two: Use a small toothbrush and a minimum amount of toothpaste to carefully clean around the wires and pins. Continue by brushing each wire, starting at the top and moving to the bottom.

Step Three: Brush your teeth as normal. Make sure to get all around, including in the back of the mouth near your molars.

Step Four: Rinse your mouth out thoroughly with water. Check your teeth in the mirror to ensure they’re clean before reinserting the removable parts you took out in step one.

If you wear braces, it is important to try to brush your teeth at least twice a day using the methods we’ve outlined here

How to Floss with Braces

In addition to learning how to brush teeth with braces, you’ll also want to know the correct way to floss.

Thanks to the wire that connects braces from one tooth to another, the process can be a bit more challenging than you might expect. The good news? It’s not totally impossible.

To correctly floss with braces, you’ll want to use a floss threader. This special tool makes it easier to clean under the archwires, allowing you to ensure any leftover food debris or plaque is eliminated.

You’ll also need waxed floss, as unwaxed floss is more likely to get stuck in your braces.
