Do Braces Hurt?

Braces are a normal part of development for many adolescents. The goal of braces is to resolve problems with tooth alignment, improving oral health and overall appearance. However, when an orthodontist recommends braces, most patients are concerned that the process will be painful. The information below answers this common question: do braces hurt?

Do Braces Hurt? – Getting Your Braces Put On

The process of getting your braces put into place should not cause you any pain. At the beginning of the process, your orthodontist will place bands on your back teeth. This may involve some pressure, but it shouldn’t hurt. Next, the orthodontist will use a special glue to attach the braces to the rest of your teeth. Although the glue may cause a bad taste in your mouth, this part of the process will not be painful either.

A few hours after your braces have been put into place, you may begin to experience some soreness as your teeth adjust to the changes. However, this soreness is typically mild. In most cases, you will be able to relieve the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers. You can also avoid additional discomfort by sticking to soft foods like mashed potatoes and pasta until the soreness has subsided.

Do Braces Hurt? – Adjustments

Your orthodontist will schedule multiple adjustments of your braces as you wear them. These adjustments gradually move your teeth into the proper position. Each time you get an adjustment, you may experience some soreness and discomfort a few hours after the appointment. As with the initial appointment, you can deal with this discomfort by eating soft foods and taking over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.

Braces may cause some mild to moderate discomfort at certain times, but they should never cause extreme pain.
